Special care for our mothers and babies is important to UAMS Medical Center. That’s why the entire 5th floor on the newly constructed E-Wing of the hospital was designed solely for labor and delivery. Every suite on this floor is private and comes with deluxe accommodations including a recliner, private shower and free television.

Each suite is also equipped so that labor, delivery and immediate recovery can all be done in one spacious room that’s big enough for the entire family.

Normally, mom and baby without complications only have to stay in the hospital 24-hours after delivery. You will spend that time on the mother-baby unit with nurses who will help you prepare to care for yourself and your new baby at home. A day or two after you get home, a nurse will call and check on you and the baby.

The labor and delivery floor also has two technologically advanced neonatal recusitation rooms right in the unit. This allows infants who are at a high risk for complications to be stabilized before moving to the neonatal intensive care nursery.

Should your baby be born with medical problems due to premature birth, etc., it is especially comforting to know that University Hospital’s neonatal intensive care nursery is one of the most sophisticated facilities in the state and regularly receives referrals from other hospitals around the state. Recent statistics reveal that the mortality rate for our neonatal nursery is the lowest in the nation.

Tours of UAMS Medical Center's modern labor and delivery unit are provided free of charge twice a month. This tour gives expectant parents the opportunity to see the large birthing suites and find out about the various options available.
